ABSTRACT

Introduction: Online teaching, learning, and evaluation are inevitable to ensure the continuity of medical education delivery throughout the COVID-19 Pandemic. Based on medical lecturers' experiences during the COVID-19 movement control order (MCO), this study looked into the problems of implementing online teaching, learning, and assessment. Methods: During the COVID-19 MCO, a hermeneutic phenomenology study was conducted using reflective written exercises to explore the challenges faced by medical lecturers. The medical lecturers were given online open-ended questions via a Google form to help them reflect on their previous experiences. The reflective written comments were analysed by ATLAS.ti. Thematic analysis was performed for coding and categorizing the reflective comments into meaningful codes, categories, and themes. Results: A total of 29 medical lecturers responded to the open-ended reflective questions. They were 16 females, and 13 males representing four main medical specialties: basic science (n=10), medical-based (n=9), surgical-based (n=5), and laboratory-based (n=5). The thematic analysis identified five themes of challenges faced by medical lecturers during the pandemic that include ICT facility and support, lecturers' receptivity, online students' engagement, online assessment, and online teaching. Conclusion: This study emphasised the common obstacles faced by medical lecturers during the COVID-19 MCO in order to maintain the continuity of medical education delivery. Students, lecturers, curriculum, ICT facility, and technical assistance were all part of the issues. Several proposals for charting ways to improve medical education delivery during the epidemic were explored. © 2022 UPM Press. All rights reserved.

ABSTRACT

Nasal dorsal augmentation is popular among Asian population compare with Caucasian where they more towards reduction and corrective rhinoplasty. The implants can be autografts (derived from the patient s own tissues);homografts (derived from tissues obtained from a different donor of the same species) and alloplasts (implants that are either semisynthetic or entirely synthetic). We present a case of infected cosmetic nasal implant in a 35-year-old female. She presented with nasal pain and discharge which started with nasal tip discomfort and redness almost 6 months with history of nasal surgery for one year. After she failed to response to multiple courses of antibiotics, a computed tomography revealed a nasal prosthesis at the nasal dorsum with possible sign of infection. Due to COVID-19 pandemic, there was delay seeing specialist for revision rhinoplasty. Later the nasal implant was removed under general anaesthesia by an otorhinolaryngologist considering the delay with the risk of ascending infection to cavernous sinus and osteomyelitis. The clinical features, imaging and urgency to be treated were reviewed. © 2021 Teikyo University School of Medicine. All rights reserved.

ABSTRACT

Online medical teaching and learning during the COVID-19 pandemic are feasible yet challenging tasks to accomplish, especially when lecturers have clinical duties at the same time. Even though multiple gadgets can make it easier to reach students, an important challenge is that while doing ward work, clinical teachers may resort to using the same gadgets that they use for teaching purposes, which are their mobile phones. This imposes an extra health threat if the hand hygiene standard operating procedure is overlooked. This threat is made worse when contaminated mobile phone surfaces are brought home. The preparation for disasters such as pandemic is essential across the academic institutions. Evidence has shown that greater readiness for disasters saved lives, however, with not enough preparation costs lives. The pandemic influenza causing serious emotional and psychological distress can take place at any time often without notification. Hence, collecting data on the most effective measures for each type of critical incident will give crisis responders the opportunity to intervene efficiently when reacting to the outbreak. Therefore, results were referred to means score and found among the centres, both get higher with (M:55.23), the centre which operate less than 5 years shows high means of preparedness (M=52.23) and owner seems more prepared with mean score (M=53.25). In other word, this pandemic is their first time experienced, thus results show not significant. However this will be their new experience to be well-prepared in all aspects such planning, student, infection policy and also communication so that they can manage well if a pandemic happen again. © 2020 Ubiquity Press.
